MARAMA: Fiji’s First Ever All-Female Band.

Fiji’s vibrant music scene has taken a groundbreaking leap with the
emergence of MARAMA, branded as “Fiji’s first all-female band.” This
revolutionary group not only represents a significant milestone in gender
equality within the Pacific Islands but also challenges traditional norms,
inspiring a new generation of female artists.

Meet the Members

Adi Vasiti Nakautoga, known as “DeeVa,” has always had a passion for
music, highlighted by her hit single “Suva ft. Wilo.” Her journey reflects a
deep-rooted love for the craft coupled with her smooth-sounding vocals
that continues to captivate audiences.

Marilyn Mataisi, a final-year law student, drawing from her upbringing in
a musical family, she brings her unique perspective to the band with her
mesmerising vocals and enticing stage presence.

Kula Tikoisuva, the lead guitarist, is notable for being self-taught and for her unique left-handed playing style, which allows her to play the guitar upside-down. In addition to her impressive guitar skills, she also contributes supporting vocals to the group, enriching MARAMA’s sound with her harmonious voice.

Elaine Gock, the band’s bassist, grew up surrounded by music, influenced
by her father who managed the popular band Hotshotz in the late ‘90s and
early 2000s. Her diverse musical background includes performances with
various bands and a blend of genres ranging from RnB to reggae.

Naomi Kaloumaira comes from a musically rich family, which fuelled her passion for R&B. As a vocalist, guitarist, and keyboard player, she showcases her dynamic talent and commitment to her musical journey, highlighted by her debut track “Nomu Yali.”

Teagan Fong, self-taught on the drums at 18, she won the Battle of the
Bands in 2008. Beyond music, she is also known for owning SunFryer, a
well-loved fish and chips restaurant in Fiji.

A Unique Collective
“MARAMA” directly translating to Woman or Lady in the I-Taukei
language, is not just about music; it embodies the spirit and strength of
Fijian women.

The band members represent a diverse range of ages, spanning from their
mid-20s to early 40s. This age diversity highlights the band’s dedication to
inclusivity and empowerment, demonstrating that talent and passion for
music can flourish at any stage of life.

The band breaks conventional beauty standards by promoting body
positivity and femininity through their diverse appearances. They
exemplify that women of colour can excel in the music industry despite
societal expectations.

The formation of MARAMA was orchestrated by KUKI the Managing
Director of Nalawa Holdings and parent company Resonance
Entertainment Fiji, who recognized the potential and talent within these
women. Their presence in the music scene is a powerful statement about
breaking barriers and celebrating diversity.

“Marama Dina” Music Video
Last Wednesday (November 20th), the music video for their hit track
“Marama Dina” was released, produced by Resonance Media, that
featured videos from their fans lip syncing the chorus of the song. The
group actively engages with fans through their social media platforms
@maramafiji on Facebook and Instagram.

MARAMA continues to inspire and uplift women across Fiji and beyond,
proving that passion for music knows no gender, status, nor age
boundaries.
