Fiji’s music scene has long been defined by its rich blend of culture and genre, and in 2022, a new force began to stir. Vegas 6, a band founded by Fiji’s highly acclaimed artist Apakuki Nalawa, also known as Kuki, has since risen as a powerhouse on the island. Known for weaving folk, country, vude, and reggae into unforgettable harmonies, the band quickly captured the hearts of locals and travellers alike.
Vegas 6, comprised of Trent Logaivau, Jone Tanoa, John Kado, Kata Ratumuri, and Jordan Korosavu, first came together at the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa in Natadola amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Their story began with a stroke of serendipity. The band members, who were working and residing at the resort, stayed in the sixth villa—a residence fondly nicknamed “Vegas” by the staff. When they were unexpectedly booked to play at a beach party, they needed a name quickly. Inspired by their villa number and its playful name, Vegas 6 was born.
Under Kuki’s visionary guidance, the band crafted a distinctive sound that resonates deeply with audiences across Fiji. Kuki, who is also the founder and managing director of Nalawa Holdings—the parent company to Resonance Entertainment—saw the potential in Vegas 6 from the start. “There’s something special about Vegas 6,” Kuki shared. “The blend of genres, their talent, and the way they connect with people makes them stand out. They’re able to reach people through music, bringing joy and meaning to every performance.”
Their hit song, Gunu Pauta, has become a defining anthem in Fiji’s music scene. The song, an homage to the unique camaraderie created by kava, beautifully captures the spirit of connection, courage, and warmth among friends sharing in the Fijian ritual. The lyrics and melody resonate with audiences, creating a deep sense of unity that only music and cultural traditions like kava can inspire.
Vegas 6’s journey hasn’t just been about hits and harmonies—it’s also about meaningful performances. This year, they took the stage at the Hibiscus Festival, serenading the Hibiscus contestants on crowning night. As the contestants glided across the stage in their evening gowns, the band performed their debut hit single, E Veibogi, a song that speaks to the beauty and allure of nightfall in Fiji. It was a moment of pure magic, captivating the audience and further solidifying Vegas 6 as a beloved band in the Fijian community.
Managed by Resonance Entertainment, the music management arm of Nalawa Holdings, Vegas 6 is in good company, sharing the stage with InsideOut, Kuki’s own band, as well as the Yadra retail brand and Resonance Media. This network has allowed Vegas 6 to thrive and expand their reach beyond live performances, connecting with fans through social media and online platforms.
With a new single in the works, Vegas 6 is poised to continue their journey, blending tradition with innovation, heart with harmony. Fans can follow their adventures and upcoming performances on Facebook (@Vegas 6) and enjoy videos of their performances on the Resonance Entertainment YouTube channel.
As they move forward, one thing is certain: Vegas 6 isn’t just a band; they’re a movement, capturing the spirit of Fiji and bringing people together through music, culture, and a passion for life.
