Vinaka Vakalevu, Manshika: A Beacon of Pride for Fiji at Miss Universe

In November 2024, Fiji’s flag soared high on the global stage as Manshika Prasad graced the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico. After a 43-year hiatus, Manshika’s journey to represent our island nation was a dream realized, a powerful platform used to advocate against domestic violence, and a heartfelt celebration of Fijian culture.

For Manshika, this journey began years ago as a wide-eyed Year 9 student with aspirations of standing under the spotlight of the world’s most prestigious beauty pageant. “I wanted to use the platform to advocate against violence against women and girls and hopefully open doors to work with an organization to be a powerful voice for this cause,” she shares. Her journey to Mexico was filled with preparation, challenges, and an unwavering commitment to her vision.

A Proud Return After 43 Years

Arriving in Mexico was a whirlwind of emotions for Manshika—excitement, nervousness, and pride, all wrapped in a sense of honour. “It was a long journey, but I was happy to be there and looked forward to every moment of the experience,” she reflects. Representing Fiji after more than four decades carried immense responsibility, and she was determined to make every moment count.

Among 125 delegates from across the globe, Manshika stood tall, embodying the warmth and resilience of Fijians. “Competing on this stage was a blend of challenges, personal growth, and forming lifelong friendships. I had the honour of sharing Fiji’s rich culture, from our traditional dances to teaching others about the Bula spirit.” Her fellow contestants were quick to embrace her warmth, with Miss South Africa even affectionately “adopting” her as part of her South African team.

Showcasing Fiji’s Unique Identity

Manshika’s representation of Fiji was more than just words—it was woven into her wardrobe, her performances, and her interactions. She proudly showcased the essence of the Bula spirit, which embodies the friendliness, hospitality, and joy of Fijian culture. Her radiant smile and cultural stories brought to life the vibrancy of our traditions. As a brand ambassador for Fiji Water, she also gave her fellow contestants a taste of Fiji through this globally renowned product.

Her most memorable moment during the competition? A light-hearted TikTok collaboration with Miss Bahrain that left them laughing for 30 minutes. “It was a wholesome moment amidst all the chaos,” she recalls with a smile.

Overcoming Challenges with Grace

The journey to Miss Universe wasn’t without its obstacles. “From the day I was crowned to arriving at Miss Universe, there were challenges. But I stayed calm, collected, and held faith in God.” Her resilience shone through, not only during her preparations but throughout the competition.

Manshika dedicated herself to rigorous training, from fitness routines to public speaking sessions with a mentor. Meditation, mindfulness, and gratitude practices helped her remain grounded and focused. Supported by her family and friends, she embraced every challenge as a stepping stone to growth.

A Lasting Legacy

Participating in Miss Universe has been transformative for Manshika, both personally and professionally. “This journey has boosted my confidence, broadened my perspective, and deepened my appreciation for my heritage. It has also opened doors for new opportunities and reinforced my passion for advocacy.”

Looking ahead, Manshika has ambitious plans to continue her work as a role model and advocate for Fiji. She is eager to collaborate with organizations like the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and work on projects providing clean water access in rural communities. Her vision also includes establishing a foundation to support young Fijians in achieving their educational and career goals.

Through community service, public speaking, and cultural promotions, Manshika hopes to inspire young Fijian women to embrace their authenticity and pursue their dreams. “I’ve learned that with determination and a positive mindset, you can overcome any obstacle and make a significant impact,” she says, a message she hopes will resonate with aspiring queens back home.
