That voice belongs to Justin-Blake Hickes, known to many as The Fijian Tenor.
At 30 years old, Justin is making waves with his unique blend of classical and pop influences. His voice is one that doesn’t just sing—it tells a story, stirring something deep within his listeners. Despite his mixed European heritage, his heart beats to the rhythm of Fiji, and that’s what makes his music feel so authentic and so deeply personal.
His journey wasn’t paved with formal training at prestigious music schools. Instead, he honed his craft through sheer passion and dedication, proving that talent, when fuelled by determination, can break boundaries. In 2019, he became a founding member of Prima Voce, Fiji’s first-ever classical vocal group. It was here that he made his mark as the country’s leading tenor, winning over audiences with a voice that was both powerful and tender.
Justin’s passion for the arts took him beyond the world of singing – he stepped into the spotlight as Sam Carmichael in Fiji’s first-ever adaptation of Mamma Mia! The Musical, proving that his talent knows no bounds. And his love for music has taken him beyond Fiji’s shores, too. As part of the Primanavia Choir, he represented Fiji at the World Choir Games in Auckland, where they proudly won gold. He was even invited to Samoa to help launch the Solfa Music School in Apia – a moment that truly reflected his growing influence in the Pacific music scene.
But if you ask Justin, his biggest joy isn’t just about standing in the spotlight. It’s about sharing that light with others. That’s why his upcoming concert, The Fijian Tenor & Friends, is something truly special. Taking place on March 29th at the Civic Centre Lower Auditorium, this concert will officially open the Fringe Festival 2025 with a lineup of talented artists, performing classics we all know and love – some with a fresh, unexpected twist.
“It’s always a privilege to share the stage with other talented artists,” Justin says. “Music is meant to be shared, and I love creating a space where others can shine too. We’re so excited to bring something truly special to the audience.”
A special moment in the concert will be Justin’s live performance of The Prayer featuring Jedidiah. This song has already touched many hearts, but Justin has added something uniquely Fijian – lyrics in our own language, making this powerful song feel even more personal and connected to home.
