Fijian Artist Releases Special Cover to Honour the Late Tejano Icon
Musical artist Apakuki Nalawa, known as KUKI, is set to release a heartfelt rendition of Selena Quintanilla’s timeless ballad, I Could Fall in Love. The release date is deeply symbolic, marking the anniversary of Selena’s tragic passing on March 31, 1995.
A global sensation and an icon of Tejano music, Selena’s impact transcends cultures and generations. KUKI, who has long admired the late star, recently visited her gravesite in Corpus Christi, Texas, before recording the song as a personal tribute.
“Selena’s music touched the hearts of millions, and her story is one of inspiration, resilience, and passion,” said KUKI. “Visiting her final resting place was an emotional experience for me. It reminded me of how powerful music can be in keeping someone’s legacy alive. This rendition is my way of honouring her impact, not just in Latin music, but in the hearts of fans worldwide, including here in Fiji.”
The tribute coincides with a pivotal moment in Selena’s story—the upcoming parole hearing of Yolanda Saldívar, the woman convicted of her murder. Saldívar, once Selena’s fan club president and boutique manager, was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of embezzling from the singer’s businesses. Her parole hearing is scheduled for March 30, 2025.
By releasing this special rendition on March 31, KUKI hopes to celebrate Selena’s enduring legacy rather than focusing on the circumstances of her tragic death. “Selena’s music is still playing, her voice is still heard, and her influence is still strong,” KUKI shared. “This song is for all who continue to keep her spirit alive.”
KUKI’s rendition of I Could Fall in Love will be available on all major streaming platforms, and the accompanying music video will premiere on his official YouTube channel. His fans in Fiji and across the Pacific are encouraged to join in celebrating the life and music of one of the most beloved artists of all time.
