Apakuki Nalawa – A Visionary Behind Fiji’s Thriving Creative Industry

In Fiji’s bustling creative landscape, few names command as much respect and admiration as Apakuki Nalawa, better known as Kuki. From his humble beginnings as a musician to becoming the founder of multiple successful enterprises, Kuki’s journey exemplifies resilience, foresight, and a passion for empowering Fiji’s creative talent.

From Musician to Entrepreneur: The Birth of InsideOut (2013)

Kuki’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2013 with the formation of InsideOut, a band that has since become one of Fiji’s most celebrated musical groups. However, Kuki’s vision extended far beyond the stage. “I came into the music business knowing that just being a musician wouldn’t sustain me and my family,” he says. InsideOut was the foundation for something greater—a dream to support fellow musicians and create a sustainable career path for Fijian artists.

Resonance Entertainment: A New Era (2017)

In 2017, Kuki expanded his vision by establishing Resonance Entertainment, an all-encompassing talent agency. “We saw a gap in Fiji’s entertainment sector,” he explains. Resonance Entertainment became the country’s first agency to manage and employ full-time artists, fostering a professional environment for creative talent. “There was a need for good, engaging, and quality content” Kuki emphasizes.

Managing both creative and business sides of the industry is a balancing act, but Kuki’s approach is simple: “Challenges are how you learn and grow,” he says. He credits his success to patience and wisdom, always eager to learn, adapt, and refine his approach.

Yadra Retail Brand: A Symbol of Awakening (2020)

In 2020, Kuki ventured into retail with the launch of Yadra, a clothing brand inspired by his province “unique interpretation of the word “Yadra” meaning “awake.” Unlike the typical morning greeting, in Ra, “Yadra” represents an all-day awareness and vigilance. “It’s an awakening, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Stay woke, stay vigilant,” Kuki explains.

Though new to the retail industry, Kuki faced the challenge head-on. “I had no experience in retail or textiles, but I wanted our brand to spread this message,” he says. The brand has since become a reminder for people to stay true to their purpose in life, resonating with Fijians from all walks of life.

Nalawa Holdings and Resonance Media: A Creative Empire (2024)

In 2024, Kuki’s entrepreneurial spirit culminated in the establishment of Nalawa Holdings, an umbrella company that oversees his expanding business portfolio, including Resonance Media. This one-stop-shop offers everything from artist management and marketing to videography, event management, and studio recording. “We are building something truly unique for the creative industry in Fiji,” Kuki says proudly.

Resonance Media is now at the forefront of showcasing the incredible talent under their banner. “Gathering the most amazing team has been a significant milestone,” Kuki beams. The media team ensures that their artists work is represented in the best light, solidifying their position as leaders in the entertainment space.

Leading with Fearlessness

Kuki attributes much of his success to his fearlessness and adaptability. Whether navigating new industries or restructuring businesses, he has learned to embrace change. “Leadership comes naturally for me,” he says. His decision-making and problem-solving skills, combined with his ability to delegate responsibilities effectively, have been instrumental in running multiple businesses.

Looking to the Future

What’s next for Kuki and Nalawa Holdings? “Exciting projects are always popping up,” he laughs, hinting at future expansions and new ventures. With his unwavering commitment to empowering Fijian artists and his vision for Fiji’s creative industry, Kuki’s businesses are poised to continue shaping the nation’s artistic landscape for years to come.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Kuki’s story is not just one of personal success but also of inspiring a new generation of Fijian talent. His message to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: “Don’t stop working. Through tough times, don’t stop working; through triumphant times, don’t stop working. You will never go wrong. “With his relentless drive and visionary leadership, Apakuki Nalawa is not only leading the charge in Fiji’s creative industries but also proving that with courage, adaptability, and a clear purpose, anything is possible.
